Some of my top reads on design and creativity

As a graphic designer of over 14 years, here are my top 3 books I'd recommend on design and creativity:

→ Type Matters! - Jim Williams

My first creative director told me "typography will win you the job". And he wasn't wrong. This book gives an in-depth guide to the most ESSENTIAL graphic design skill of all - ✨ typography ✨

→ The Creative Way - Rick Rubin

This is one of my favourite books of all time, full stop. It's a bit "woo woo" (but forgive me, I'm into that). Rick Rubin puts the argument forth that ALL humans are blessed with innate creativity; and it is actually a trait as natural as breathing. He says that the best work comes from essentially slowing down, taking the time to notice things and creating conditions that allow good ideas and inspiration to come to you.

→ Brand Identity - Catherine Slade

If you want a comprehensive and fully illustrated guide on how bombastic (do people still use that word?) brands are created, look no further! Catherine Slade covers both the strategy side of crafting a strong brand, as well as the visual identity. As any designer knows, one doesn't work without the other.

→ Principals of Logo Design - George Bokhua

Logo design is an art form and has been made far too accessible by the likes of Canva (sue me 👀). George Bokhua gives you the low down on how to create your own unique marks that you can take pride in sharing!

Have you read any of these too? Let me know!
